Colorful — a coloring book for young children

Need a person? Write to utsavhacker@gmail.com. It is one developer answering, usually within two working days. Telling us your device (“iPhone 13”), your iOS version and what happened gets you a real answer faster.

Getting started

The first launch asks for the internet

That is expected. Colorful’s pages are not built into the app — the first launch downloads all eighty-eight of them, about 300 KB in total, and takes a few seconds on any connection. After that the app works with the wifi switched off, on a plane, in a car, or anywhere with no signal at all.

If it stops on the retry screen, the device has no working connection. Connect and tap Retry; nothing is lost.

Which devices it runs on

Any iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later. On iPhone it is held sideways.

Using it

How a child colours

Tap a shape and it fills. That is the whole idea. The rail on the right swaps between the pencil, the brush, the fill, the patterns and the eraser; the crayons are on the left. Undo and redo are always there.

The colour names are spoken aloud

Picking up a crayon says its name — twenty-one colours, in English. It is on by default and can be switched off in Settings.

Starting a page again

Give the device a shake. It asks first, and the question has to be held down for two seconds, so a shake in a car or a bag cannot lose a drawing.

Keeping a finished picture

The share button offers Save Image, Print, Messages, Mail and anything else the device can do with a picture. Saving to Photos asks permission once; the app can only add pictures and can never see the ones already there.

My child’s drawing disappeared

Every page saves itself as it is coloured, so this is rare. Drawings live on the device only — they are not in iCloud and we hold no copy — so they go with a wiped, reset or replaced device, and with “Clear downloaded pages” only if the app is then deleted. Save anything precious to Photos.

Storage, privacy and cost

Reclaiming space

Settings → Clear downloaded pages removes the downloaded artwork. It is safe: the next launch fetches what it needs again. Finished drawings are not deleted by it.

Is there advertising, or anything to buy?

No, and no. There is no advertising SDK in the app, nothing to purchase, no subscription, no account and no way for a child to reach the open web.

What is collected

Anonymous usage counts and crash reports, so we know which pages get used and when the app breaks. Drawings never leave the device. The privacy policy spells out every field.

Something is wrong

Send us the device, the iOS version, the app version and what you were doing — utsavhacker@gmail.com. A screenshot or a short screen recording is worth a paragraph. If a particular page will not open, its world and roughly where it sits in the grid is enough for us to find it.

Requests

New worlds and new pages are added by a content update, without a new app version, so a good suggestion can reach your device quickly. Tell us what your child ran out of.
